A big week with fourteen along for this Birdweek. Good weather throughout, plus many seabirds with chicks made it an unforgettable week. North Bay day a highlight “after a tasty lunch we walked along the beach, past Sooty terns – hundreds of parents and chicks of varying sizes, many being fed. The tide was low and we continued on to view the waders – and amongst the Bar-tailed godwits, Ruddy turnstones and Golden plovers we spied a Lesser sand plover.” There were also a number of rare visitors passing through the island – a Terek sandpiper, Great knot and Sharp-tailed sandpiper at the Moseley Park swamp. A calm day for our Ball’s Pyramid trip to enjoy Kermadec petrels and White-bellied storm petrels. We also enjoyed the Island’s marine life with a Ned’s Beach low tide walk and a snorkel on the reef. A bonus on the last day was to find a rare blow-in – a Dollar bird in the forest walk in Steven’s Reserve.
