U3A birding tour

Sixteen in this group from University of Third Age to explore and discover the birds of Lord Howe Island. Good weather and an active group, we enjoyed the walks and boat trips. Sooty tern and other chicks were hatching which are always a favourite photographic subject. [divider_padding]

Big rainfall for the island

On 27 May 120 mm rain fell overnight. One of the biggest rainfall events for many years and creeks opened up into the Lagoon, and waterfalls on the mountains provided a spectacular display. [divider_padding]
Ex cyclone Eusi

On 13th and 14th February ex tropical cyclone Eusi moved across Lord Howe Island. There was not flooding rains, but strong winds uprooted many trees, and waves washed through the shed at Ned’s Beach. Local SES crew cleaned up the roads and properties very quickly. [divider_padding]
Birdweek 2019

November 16 to 23 – eighteen people travelled and enjoyed the week of birding. We had great weather for the Balls Pyramid pelagic trip; and the North Bay day was a highlight, with Black noddy chicks, Red-tailed tropicbirds and waders. [divider_padding]
Film project East Australian Current

2019 October 21 to 30 – worked with a film crew from Wild Pacific Media on a documentary about The East Australian Current – included work with seabirds, vegetation, conservation and an overnight stay on Mount Gower with my son Matthew. Sustainable Energy Working Group

20th Septemeber 2019 The local Sustainable Energy Working Group held a Climate Change awareness event at the local public hall – joining the world wide action to raise awareness of this issue. Seventy people attended a presentation I gave on the impacts we have seen on Lord Howe Island, particularly in the summer of 2018/2019.
Land Bird Survey

2019 September 9 to 16. Annual land bird surveys for pre-rodent eradication monitoring with Canberra Ornithological Group volunteers. 2019 August Grey fantail sighting

2019 August 11 Ian McCallan spotted this Grey fantail in Stevens Reserve; and it stayed in the area for several weeks before disappearing. This was the first record for Lord Howe Island.
